Obituary for Hartha J Sundman

Hartha J. (nee Carlson) Sundman, 97, passed away Monday, Oct. 5, 2020, at The Fairmount Health Center at Ohio Living Breckenridge Village in Willoughby.
Born Nov. 20, 1922, in Cleveland, she was raised by her parents, Arthur and Selma (nee Swanson) Carlson in Gates Mills.
Her father, Arthur had immigrated to the United States from Sweden in 1909, as the oldest of 7 children. In 1925, he was employed as the Chauffer for the Ginn family on their family estate named, “Moxahela” in Gates Mills. She enjoyed growing up with her parents and living with other Swedish relatives on the estate, who worked as housekeepers, gardeners, and caretakers. She enjoyed lifelong friendships with the Ginn family and many others who she met in her childhood. She often would participate in celebrations at the VASA Club, a Swedish American fraternal organization located in Willowick on Lake Erie.
During World War II, she lived at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton. Her husband, Carl had enlisted and become a U.S. Air Force officer who had active duty in many counties. She was a former Worthy Matron of the Alice Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, a Masonic organization.
She was widowed in 1960, after the sudden death of her husband, Carl and assumed control of the family machine shop, Taylor Machine Products. She operated the company for many years, and ultimately sold the company to employees. She independently raised her family, and prior to retirement, worked for many years as the Office Manager of Hodson Machinery Company. Her Hodson Machinery business cards had the wonderful title “Vice President of Trivia.” She greatly enjoyed travel and was able to visit almost every U.S. state and many foreign countries.
Hartha was the lovoing mother of Cindy Sundman and Bruce (Bobbi nee Brooker) Sundman; and cherished grandmother to Caroline Sundman and Dayne Sundman.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Carl; brother, Victor Carlson; and grandson, Britton Sundman.
Private burial with family will take place at Acacia Park Cemetery in Mayfield Heights.
Arrangements are entrusted to McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Homes in Willoughby and Mentor.
